My friend and I are HUGE Harry Potter fans. We have matching lightening bolt tattoos on our left wrist. Her date of birth was coming around last year and I have always been interested in decorating cakes. I had just recently completed all four courses at Wilton School of decorating. They didn’t teach a decent technique for transferring a cartoon picture onto a cake so after much research and talks with my instructor I was prepared to try the “Frozen Butter cream” method on this homemade Harry Potter cake.
After two rough drafts I was confident and I made a 10 inch cake with Harry on his broom reaching out to take a snitch. I decided to not pipe the snitch onto the cake but create it with fondant to make it 3-D. I also added Gryffindor colored handmade flags from fondant every few inches around the top of the cake to make it appear like a stadium.
When you bake a 10×3 cake you always have batter left over for 12 cupcakes. I knew right away I wanted to use purple icing and yellow crystal sprinkles but I decided to use all of my fondant and sculpt pieces from the movie. I had a blast and ended up with an awesome set for the homemade Harry Potter cake!
The cupcakes were as follows:
The Sorting Hat
A book
A snitch
A Wand
A writing quill
A star with ‘G’ on it (for Gryffindor)
A lightening bolt
and hand piped character cakes of Harry Potter, Hermoine and Ron!
Needless to say my friend LOVED the cake!
