I made this Elmo cake for my daughter’s second birthday party. We were living in Venezuela at the time and I could not get my hands on an Elmo cake pan. I found a picture online of Elmo and my husband used an overhead projecter to enlarge it. We then traced it onto wax paper so that the image would fit on the 9″ x 13″ pan.
After baking and cooling the cake, I sprinkled the top very lightly with powdered sugar so the wax paper wouldn’t stick and so I could see the outline of my picture. I anchored the Elmo picture with toothpicks in the corners to keep it steady and, using another toothpick, carefully made holes along the border of the Elmo outline. Once I removed the wax paper, I had the perfect outline of Elmo’s face.
I used Wilton’s no taste red icing color for his face and applied it with a star tip. I used a black gel for his mouth and would have used white frosting for his eyes, but we had some recently- made merengue cookies which we used instead. They looked great.
The rest of the cake was frosted white. Since it was homemade, I hoped my daughter and her friends would recognize Elmo when they saw the cake, and they did!
