Coolest Homemade Elmo Birthday Cake

My 2 year old grandson, Max, loves everything Elmo. So for his Homemade Elmo Birthday Cake, I made 2 chocolate cake mixes into a 9 x 13 cake, a 6 inch round cake and 14 cupcakes (for extra servings). I made a simple buttercream frosting and colored part of it red with paste color. Do this the day before because the red deepens in color.

I put the red on fairly thick and used a tiny fork to scrape it up to make a furry look. I used marshmallows and brown M&M’s for the eyes. I carved the large end of a carrot for the nose and rubbed a little salad oil on it to keep it from drying out. I placed the carrot on the cake an hour before serving because I worried that the sugar in the frosting would draw water out of it.

The hat is an ice cream cone that I brushed with melted apricot jam to stick on the stars. I pushed it down into the cake a ways and put a toothpick under the upper part to keep it from laying down. I made the balloons by heating gum drops and pressing out. The mouth is melted chocolate chips squeezed through a Ziploc bag with the corner cut off. An edging of M&M’s finished it off. Very simple and fun to make.
