My son requested a Pirate Ship cake for his 5th birthday this year. After looking at what had already been submitted to this site, I decided it was something I could do.
I baked 3 9″ x 13″ chocolate cakes into pound cakes with a recipe I got from Kraft Kitchens. It required 1/3 cup sugar, 2/3 cup oil, 4 eggs and 8 oz sour cream to be added to each cake mix in place of the ingredients called for on the box. Once baked, I froze the cakes until the day before the party.
On that day, I took them straight from the freezer and stacked them up with a layer of raspberry jam between each layer. We had to cut out the center section of the top layer, so I didn’t put jam on that part. We secured the layers with wooden skewers so it wouldn’t shift while my husband carved our “ship”. Once it was carved, I put the first layer of crumb coat icing on it. I used Duncan Hines Chocolate Buttercream and it was delicious.
After putting the first coat on, I put the whole thing into the refrigerator to chill. After about an hour, I took it out and iced it again. Then I took a toothpick and drew the boards on the ship. We used melted white chocolate, piped onto plastic wrap in the shape of circles, to represent the ship’s portholes. The rails are red twists, the cannons are rolos, the plank is a kit kat candy bar and the pirates are from a set I bought. My son was absolutely thrilled with his cake.
