I decided I would make a few cakes here and there to occupy my time now my little man has gone off to preschool a couple of days a week. I have been teaching myself off YouTube on the basic how too’s. I was asked by a friend to have a go at a Hootabelle cake for her daughters birthday. She sent me an image off Google of the character and I went from there.
The cake is a choc mud with hazelnut butter cream and rich choc ganache. I cut and shaped it by hand from looking at the picture. Most of the pieces including lettering were hand cut with a scalpel and the stars with a cookie cutter. I precooked the cake during the day and let cool and went out to dinner with friends. I am a bit slow still working with the fondant so sat down at midnight to make a start. I worked thru till 6.30am then went to bed. I started again at 11am and finished her at 2.50pm, just in time to drive it to the next town over and deliver in time for the beautiful birthday girl!!
I have had very positive reactions to the cake and must say I am a bit proud that I pulled it off. I have surprised myself. The hardest part of making this cake is that I found out I have high standards for myself and had to match everything to the picture, except she has a couple of extra stitches on her wings!
