The base of this homemade In the Night garden cake is an 8″ round chocolate sponge sandwich with chocolate fudge icing centre, sat on a 10″ round cake board. The top tier is a 6″ round lemon sponge sandwich with lemon buttercream icing centre, sat on a 6″ cake board. There is a clear plastic tube which is open at one end pushed through the bottom tier, to support the top tier.
I covered the bottom cake with a thin layer of chocolate spread to stick the icing to, then covered it with green royal icing. The lemon cake was covered with lemon curd and covered with blue royal icing. The plastic tube has green icing around it, which I painted with edible glue (from eBay) to make it stick. I stuck a piece of black icing to the tube and glued mini marshmallows around the join to make it look like Makka Pakka’s cave.
The little flowers were bought but they are made of icing and stuck using edible glue. I wrote ‘Happy Birthday’ on the top tier using icing pens.
The figures are made of marzipan, coloured with food colouring.
Upsy Daisy was the most difficult due to all the different colours. Her hair is stuck on with jeweller’s wire, obviously not edible!! I wanted her to be sitting on the edge of the cake so although none of the figure were stuck to the cake, just resting, her legs were stuck to the side of the cake. Her feet were resting on jelly sweets to help support them.
