I made Dash for my son Matthew’s 8th birthday. He is a free-form cake cut from 2 large rectangle cakes. I used an enlarged clip art picture as a stencil for his outline and a guide for his features. His base is covered in homemade cream cheese icing and topped with Wilton tube icing with a large star tip (#18 or 20).
His hair and clothing are also Wilton tube icings. For his hair I used tip #32 and a smaller star tip (#16) for the rest. His face is tinted homemade cream cheese icing.
The smooth parts are made from Wilton tube icing that is patted down with my finger dipped in corn starch. This gives it a fondant look. I brushed away any excess cornstarch after the icing sets up a bit, but it will dissipate on it’s own over time.
It was a big hit, the children loved it and it was so much fun to create.
