This Jack Russell Birthday Cake is a cake I made for my Aunt Carole. She loves her 2 Jack Russell’s, so I wanted to make her a Jack Russell cake like she had never seen. I decided to make one that looked like her dog Minnie (named so because of the unusual “Minnie Mouse” spot on her side). This “life-size” version of “Minnie” is burying her bone in the backyard!
The cake is a Red Velvet, chosen for the rich color. The cake that was removed in order for Minnie to be “digging” was then crumbled up and spread out on a cookie sheet and toasted in the oven, to create the “dirt”. “Minnie” is a construction of PVC (I’ve included a picture so you can get the idea), initially covered in molding chocolate, then rice crispy treat, and finally fondant. (The molding chocolate allows the treat to stick, as it will not stick to the PVC).
The bone is made out of fondant, painted to look like a milkbone, and the cake itself is covered in buttercream icing, tinted green, with green tinted coconut sprinkled about. She loved to carry the picture along with a picture of her dog, to show off!
