I made this Jake and The Neverland Pirates cake for my daughter’s 6th birthday. The children seemed to love this one. I made the pirate ship out of rice crispie treats and covered it with chocolate flavored marshmallow fondant. I find the treats are really easy to carve into the shape you want and hold the shape really well. For me this cake ended up like a bit of a story board, I picked up a few ideas from other cakes and then strung them together to create the scene.
In this cake again I like to make the candles part of the cake so by making the holders into little fish I thought they were cute. I also learnt a few things in this cake, instead of trying to complete each figure in a single sitting I tried making them in parts and leaving them to dry and harden slightly on cocktail sticks stuck into foam before later assembling them. This worked best for Captain Hook who’s hat was a little tricky, but by leaving it dry out and hold it’s shape I was able to get it looking not too bad and put it on the captain’s head without it flopping into his eyes! I really liked making the gold doubloons and the treasure chest, just yellow fondant circles dusted with edible gold dust.
