For Joeys construction cake I started by making a vanilla sheet cake in a jelly roll pan. Cooled completely. Leaving the cake in the pan.
I began by using store bought chocolate frosting to frost the entire cake. I saved enough frosting and made a small pile for the dirt side of the cake. I used a small paper plate and placed it gently on the cake where I planned to put the lettering. Then I used crushed chocolate cookies for the dirt 1/2 and graham cracker crumbs for the sand 1/2. The plate helped so I didn’t get the crumbs on that part of the cake. The machinery came as a set which was perfect for the cake. I placed them on the dirt side and made a hole in the frosting for the scoop to sit in then used a spoon to put some cookie crumbs in it too. The rock candy I picked up at Walmart in the candy isle. I put it in the dump truck and scoop before putting them on the sand side of the cake. Piled up lots of rocks on the cake too. Candy letters for the Happy Birthday Joey, and I stuck candy rocks into the cake around letter area too. Very easy too decorate. The best thing about using toys is when I took them off the cake and cleaned them my son was thrilled to finally play with them.
