Coolest John Deere Tractor Cake

This John Deere Tractor Cake was my grandson Mason’s 2nd birthday cake. I used the John Deere tractor pinata as my pattern and made the cake the same size as the pinata, which made making patterns a lot easier. I used yellow cake mix and tinted it green to make a neon green color which was really cool when the cake was cut.

I used a cake board to separate the layers (which made serving a lot easier) and to make the fender wells. I taped pipe cleaners under the fenders on the outer edge so they would hold their shape and covered the board completely with foil. I used marshmallow fondant to make the hubcaps and the white parts of the cab, and the deer that was on the back.

I used a green icing marker to draw all the detail for the cab. The wheels are rice krispy treats covered with black candy coating. I used a gallon pitcher lid to cut out the big wheels and a 1/2 gallon pitcher lid to cut out the front wheels. I found some 4″ inch striped candles that made perfect smoke stacks!

The main thing about this cake is making sure you have enough support sticks in this cake because it is heavy and may shift some when done. The back end of the tractor shifted while transporting. Didn’t take into consideration that I would have to go up and down some big hills to get to the party location. Had to do some patching at the site.

I used Styrofoam blocks to hold the cake up and used brown sugar for the dirt road. I used an aluminum pan to make the trailer that held haystack cookies and rice krispy hay bails. All in all, I thought it turned out pretty cute!

I also included a couple of photos of the construction.

  1. Your cake is great and I think the best part is the engineered foundation, that really gave a right dimensions. Good job!

  2. Thank you for adding construction pictures! It’s so great to see final pictures but often difficult to picture how it was done, even with reading explanations. Looks great! Thanks!

  3. This is so artistic!! I hope I can recreate it for my son’s 3rd birthday! What was the overall size of the tractor cake? How many 9×13 cakes did you use to make the layers?
