Coolest Jungle Birthday Cake

This Jungle Birthday Cake was a surprise 40th birthday cake for my sister in-law. She likes lizards and frogs so I thought to make a jungle scene. I looked at cakes from this website for inspiration. Since it was an adult cake I added a little humor.

The base cake is a 13×9 sheet cake and I used an additional 9×9 cake, cut and stacked for the waterfall. A couple lollipop sticks were inserted into the stack for added stability. Two boxes of yellow cake mix will be more than enough. Two batches of Wilton buttercream frosting recipe were used. All tinted as needed with gel food coloring.

Boxed white fondant was tinted and hand molded for the frogs, lizards, plants, fish, kayak, shoes, ladybugs, flowers. Everything is edible. I used a black edible food writer marker for small details like the ladybugs and shoelaces. Frosting tips used: a leaf tip to make the grass (couldn’t find my grass tip), moon shaped tip for the water, small circular tip for dirt.

My toddler daughter made the flowers by rolling up thin strips of fondant and used the marker for all the eyes. A happy birthday message is written on the backside of the waterfall. The scene depicts my brother in-law, an avid kayaker, not in his kayak but in the mouth of the lizard with his feet sticking out. It was my sister in-law’s birthday and she loved the humor of it.
