This is a Ladybug Birthday Cake I made for my daughter’s 5th birthday. I used two 9 inch rounds and filled them with raspberry jam and did a crumb coating of butter cream. I them covered it with homemade marshmallow fondant (I think the store bought versions taste terrible!). The petals are yellow fondant that I then “painted” with food coloring and a small brush. I also made impressions in the petals, for more texture, using fondant tools.
The center of the flower is just brown butter cream. The ladybugs are muffin tops (I filled the cupcake pan higher than usual to insure a puffy top) covered in red fondant. I attached them to the cake with butter cream and a toothpick for extra hold. The dots are m&m’s, the antennae are rolled tootsie rolls. It was such a hit and best of all, tasted amazing!!
One tip for coloring your own fondant is to wear gloves and give it a quick zap in the microwave (<10sec) before kneading in the color. It requires so much less muscle!! I also dab my fingers in Crisco for less sticky kneading!
