Coolest Ladybug Birthday Cake

My sister made this Ladybug Birthday Cake for my daughter’s first birthday. We had a ladybug picnic. We used your site and tweaked a few things to come up with our own design.

The bottom layer was a 12-in, the middle layer an 8-in and the top was a 6-in round with a ladybug on top. She used fondant to make the circles and the two small ladybugs on the side. She star tipped the ladybug which turned out precious and we used pipe cleaners for the antennae.

The eyes on the ladybug were a little tricky. It was so cute that the birthday girl didn’t even want to dig into it. The worst part was that the party was outdoors and it was 104 degrees. We had to cut the cake first, because the piping around the layers had started to melt.

This cake went a long way. It was the HIT of the party!

  1. That is awesome. You did a great job. I made a ladybug cake for a friend of mine’s little girl for her 1st birthday and this puts it to shame. Wow! I am very impressed. I hope you had lots of oohs and ahhs over it!

  2. Thank you very much for this post. I made the lady bug portion for my daughter’s 3rd birthday. She chose the lady bug theme. I star tipped it, use the pipe cleaners, but decided to get creative with the eyes and mouth. It seemed like it was going to be really hard to get it to stick to the star tipped portion. I decided to make the eyes and smile on wax paper and freeze it. then I could peel it off and stick them on. The pieces thaw and get soft really quick, so you should cut them apart before you freeze and remove them 1 and a time to apply. I did the mouth in 3 sections.

  8. This cake is beautiful and fun. Next time you have to make a cake for outdoors, use icing recipe that calls for mixture of shortening, a little bit of butter and powdered sugar. It will last outdoors. I live in Hawaii and that’s always been an issue here, but I started using that recipe and it works.

  9. The cake looks beautiful. Could you tell me how much red to out in the icing to get the red color. I tried adding the Wilton gel red and I could only get hot pink. I am making my baby 1st birthday cake.
    Thanks.
