To make this Ladybug Birthday Cake Design I used (2) 9×11 sheet cakes iced green (buttercream icing) for the grass. The big ladybug in the middle was baked in a small oven safe bowl and I made mini cupcakes out of the rest of the batter. For the two smaller ladybugs I used tops of the mini cupcakes for the bodies and the “stumps” of the mini cupcakes iced with chocolate icing for the heads.
I also used a mini cupcake for the big ladybug’s head. The bigger middle ladybug’s spots and eyes are smarties and the stripe down her back, and her antennae and legs are made from black licorice. I added a dot of chocolate frosting to each of her blue smartie eyes. The smaller ladybugs’ spots are mini M&Ms, and for their antennae I cut the black licorice strips in half lengthwise to make them thinner. Their eyes are dots of white icing with star sprinkles in the middle.
In order to get the licorice to lay properly on the bigger ladybug’s back, and for the legs to stay stuck into the “grass” I inserted toothpicks through the licorice into the cake. The black border around the edge is just more licorice. I used silver dragees for the number 3.
