After looking through the dozens of ladybug pictures on this site, I finally set out to make my own Homemade Ladybug Birthday Cake Design for my daughter’s 4th birthday! I’m really not a big fan of fondant (eating it or letting my kids eat it) so I wanted to do something with all homemade buttercream icing. I used 2 10″ round cake pans for the body and a Pyrex bowl for the head. I actually prepared 3 cake mixes and had a tiny bit left over.
I used the Wilton gel colors to get the most vivid colors. Most of the decorating was with a star tip – #21? I think, then I just used a small round tip for doing the eyes (flattening out the icing with my finger dipped in cornstarch). It was my first time at making grass with icing, and I think it turned out pretty well!
All in all, I am very happy with this cake and I know my daughter was too!
