This Ladybug Birthday Cake Idea was my first decorative cake ever. The head and body of the cake were both made with bowls. The bottom was formed with two 9×11 pushed together. I used gel food coloring as I read that it works better and I wanted bold colors.
For the black I bought a small can of chocolate frosting, and it still took awhile to get the black color. I made my own frosting for the rest and colored it pink and green. I did tufts of grass using a Wilton grass tip and that was tons of fun. The flowers are the most simple ones you can make with a star tip and twisting as you come up.
The dots on the back are actually fondue chips that I then frosted black so I would have decent circles. Licorice for the antenna. The eyes are mints that my husband brought home after the really cool eyes I made with salt water taffy melted overnight.
I froze the cake before I did a priming layer on the cake to not get crumbs. Then the cake was sweating as it thawed, so I don’t know if I would do that again.
