I made this Homemade Lightning McQueen Birthday Cake for my nephew’s 5th birthday party. It’s only the second cake I have ever decorated, and once I knew the steps to take it was surprisingly easy! The bottom sponge was 14 inches by 8 or 9 inches and I think that did almost 40 party bags. It is just a sponge sandwich with jam and buttercream.
For the car, I have put on a photo of how I arranged the sponge pieces, I then covered it in buttercream to fill in the cracks and make a smooth surface for the icing to go onto. The shape that you see in icing is the same as the shape with the buttercream on the sponge. The bit that sticks up at the back was quite fragile, so if you made this cake just be careful with that bit or try to make it a bit more sturdy than I did! I stuck all the decorations on with a little bit of buttercream and did the eyes and dots on the wheels with food colouring pens. I finally piped the word ‘rust-eze’ on the bumper. (I’m not very good at piping, so it doesn’t look great but the kids loved it).
On the big picture of the whole cake there is quite a lot of icing sugar on the cake, but at the party this had all gone, i brushed a load off and then the rest seemed to either just come off by its self or blend into the cake.
