I baked my nephew’s favorite character from Disney “Cars”, a Lightning McQueen Cake. The base is chocolate cake baked in an 8×12 pan. I didn’t have time to bake another cake for the roof so I used Styrofoam.
After I sculpted the roof I wrapped it in aluminum foil and attached it to the cake using butter cream. I then contoured the sides of the cake and the front portion of the car. I sliced the cake that I got from the side and front portion into several strips in order to form the spoiler and held together using butter cream.
To make the indention on the hood, I cut a “square” shape then on the hood and piled the cake portion that I got to the side of the hood to give it a more contoured look. I am still having difficulty putting fondant in one piece on to the cake without it tearing (a newbie to fondant cakes) so what I did was to put the red fondant portion by portion and smoothed the “joint” fondant with lard.
For the tires I covered 4 cupcakes with black fondant and inserted cupcakes in the holes that I made where the tires were to be placed. Each square of the checkered black and white racing pattern was individually pasted on the cake board. Piping gel was used to secure the cake and the racing pattern to the cake board.
I made a mistake by writing “lard” instead of “vegetable shortening” to smooth the portions where the fondant joins.
awesome cake and your nephew must have been on cloud 9.
