My 2 year old is crazy about Cars, so I thought what better than a Lightning McQueen cake.
The cake was a large sheet of Chocolate Sponge, about 30cmx50cm. I first cut out an oval shape for the bottom layer and cut out a smaller layer for the roof, cutting the front and back edges at a slant for the windscreens.
I then used a glass to cut out cavities for the wheels. The wheels were made of biscuit, and then I coloured some plastic icing black and rolled into a sausage shape and wrapped around the biscuits. This was done a few days before the time.
I covered the whole cake in chocolate ganache. I made a batch of Marshmallow fondant icing, coloured in red, and rolled out into a big sheet. I then covered the cake with the fondant icing, cutting away circles for the tires. The trimming was all plastic icing, coloured and cut out and placed once the cake was covered.
My son was highly impressed with his car cake!
