This Lightning McQueen cake is just a 9X11 that I cut in half and stacked, then shaved to the shape I wanted with a knife. I was inspired by many cakes on this site and decided to try my own version with what I thought I could “handle”.
The donuts are tires (which were almost more popular than the cake) all the white trim is marshmallow fondant, and here’s a great tip, the red icing is buttercream that I bought at Sam’s Wholesale Club. After spending a lot of money on red dye that still wasn’t cutting it, I saw this tip on a different site. I called the bakery at Sam’s and they said they had plenty. It was less than $10 for a big tub of it and it was yummy! I’ll never make red icing again!
To make it as smooth as possible, I let the buttercream harden, and then used a mini paint roller to crush the ridges down.
My 4 yr old loved it, and so did his friends!
