Cool Lightning Mcqueen Cake Design

My son requested a Lightning McQueen cake for his 4th birthday. My initial thought was to try 3D, but then I decided against it, as I wanted to steer clear of having to use over-coloured fondant, which most kids reject.

I cut this Lightning Mcqueen Cake Design to shape after baking in a big rectangular tin (I have the drawing/stencil if anyone would like it) and applied a thin layer of chocolate buttercream all over the cake to seal it and keep it moist. I then rolled out a THIN layer of fondant for the top, cut it to shape and then sprayed some colour using Wilton color spray (a fine spray of yellow underneath the red helps it to stay red rather than pink!).

I covered the sides with red raspberry strap. The wheels are wagon wheels, and I used mini m&ms, jubes and more sour strap to create many of the details. The outline is just a piped royal icing (first coloured with cocoa then a bit of black) which dried hard. My son and his friends were thrilled, and they gobbled up every last bite. As I was cutting it many of the boys were yelling which part they wanted (the wagon wheels went first) which is a nice change from having the icing left on the plate.

  1. Hi there, just wanted to say your sons cake looks amazing and actually do-able – is there anyway you could forward me the template as we would love to make one for my sons 4th birthday in the middle of April.
