I made this Homemade Lion 1st Birthday Cake for my son’s first birthday. I used the small Wilton bear cake for the lion. I cut off the legs and the hands of the cake and built up the bridge of the nose with leftover cake to get the shape I wanted. I baked an additional square cake and cut out the shape I wanted for the front and hind legs and “glued” them on with buttercream frosting. I frosted the lion with tip 233 and I used tip #10 for the mane. For the paws I used tip 10 to make the circles. For the eyes I used a cake writing black jell. I used tip number 10 to make the nose and mouth. For the white around the mouth I used a small star tip.
For the bottom cake I baked two 6 inch round pans. I filled them with a buttercream cookie filling and then frosted. I made the palm trees with a #10 tip for the trunk and a #69 tip (this was my first time using a leaf tip, so I think I’ll do better next time, but I’m happy overall with how it came out). I decorated the bottom and the top with a #27 star tip.
I wanted to be able to pull off the lion cake and have my son eat it by himself, and for the family to be able to eat the bottom cake. Therefore I put the lion cake on a 6 inch cake circle that I first covered in blue fondant.
I was really happy with how it came out and my son loved it!
