My three year-old wanted a Little Einstein’s Red Rocket birthday cake. Like many others on this site, I searched for a Red Rocket cake pan and a store that could create one. When all routes failed, my husband and I ended up creating our own cake.
We used 1 9×13 pan for the sky. We baked another 9×13 pan and cut out the base of the rocket ship. We then used a dome pan for the top of the ship. The boosters are made out of 2 cupcakes each.
The trickiest part was getting the red coloring just right. I didn’t realize just how much red food coloring was needed. I also iced the sky first and then placed the rocket base on top, iced it before adding the dome. This gave me a more stable area to work with. I put the cake in the fridge for about an hour for the icing to harden a bit before designing the windows. I used red licorice for the window sections and topped it off with a red lollipop.
