I made this Little Mermaid Birthday Cake for my daughter’s 5th birthday. This was the first cake I had ever made. I bought the basic tips by Wilton for the details on all the first. I used buttercream, but wanted a smooth look for the icing, so I used solid paper towels to pat the icing smooth after it had set for about 10 minutes. If you do this too soon it will be a mess!
This took a lot of colors and time to do the details, but she loved it! Since she was five I used four fish candles and the little mermaid candle on top. I perched Ariel on an upside down cupcake to set her higher and surrounded her with seaweed.
