My granddaughter wanted a Little Mermaid birthday cake for her 7th birthday. I bought the Wilton Little Mermaid cake pan at eBay but it did not come with the face plate.I searched the net on ideas on how to do the face. I saw a posting at this site on how to do one using fondant. I tried it but was not very successful (it molded very nicely though) but because I am not an artist the face did not look like Ariel at all.
I thought maybe I could do the face plate by melting chocolate, easier, not much art talent needed. I painted the cake pan cavity as in the picture of the Little Mermaid using melted chocolate and refrigerated it overnight. When I flipped the pan with the chocolate mold the next morning, the neck part broke (I probably did not put enough chocolate), so I just connected the face and body with more melted chocolate (you can see it on the picture).
I used butter cream icing to decorate the tail, fins and hair. The sea creatures were all from molded chocolates. I covered the cake board with blue butter cream icing. The cake was a strawberry cake with cream cheese icing filling.
Everybody at the party thought the cake was awesome. Some mom’s who were at the party asked how I did it. The children just loved it. There were 25 children at the party, so we had to give them smaller pieces of cake. The children came back for seconds and also asked for the candies (the chocolate molded face and the sea creatures). Good thing I made cupcakes too, because the cake was gone in a breeze.
