I made this Little Mermaid birthday cake for my manager’s daughter’s sixth birthday. I had heard about creating an icing transfer but had never done it. This is my first try and I really like how it came out. I have done a couple of more cakes like this and will post them as I get the pictures in.
The cake is 2 10″ cake pans with chocolate (box) cake mixes. I also added some different items than the box calls for because I have found that they help a larger cake stay “together” better. I then used the standard Wilton butter cream recipe. I then found the Little Mermaid clip art and enlarged it to fit the cake size.
I then just mixed icing colors to get the colors that I wanted. I also used black icing from a Wilton Black Icing tube that you buy at the store because it is a true black and looks great for the outline. You have to invert the picture so that when you flip it over after you are finished it is facing the correct way.
You then place wax paper over the picture and out line it. You then have to color in the areas that you want different colors. You then have to put a final layer of icing – the same color- as your cake, all over the whole picture. You then place it in the freezer for about an half an hour so it can firm up.
When you take it out of the freezer you place one hand under it and then gently place it where you want it on the cake. Once it is done though it is hard to move it because it can mess up you icing that is on you cake. So make sure it is where you want it when you remove your hand. Then just gently press it into the cake and slowly peel the wax paper off.
It was a lot easier than I thought it would be.
That is awesome! I’m going to give that a try. Thanks for sharing :-)
