This is a Dora Little Mermaid cake that my wife made for our daughters 2nd birthday. It is her first attempt at making a theme cake and I think she did quite well. She has no prior experience at decorating.
She used a standard cake mix in a quarter sheet pan. Made the Icing from scratch (Wilton recipe), and used food coloring for the tints. The “seaweed” is made from Fruit Rollups. The entire project took about five hours to complete as all frosting was made and dyed as needed.
Some of the problems she encountered were: Trying to get the hand detail right (never did) and accidentally knocking some of the border detail off during the decorating process. After all was said and done (and she had time to de-stress) she was pleased with the results. We’ll see what the family thinks tomorrow at the party.
this has been the best Dora mermaid cake I have seen. would your wife bake it again?
What a lovely cake – well done, I love it! My daughter is having her 5th Birthday party this week and she wants an Ariel cake so I’m going to use your idea and make the seaweed out of the roll-ups.
