This log cake was a simple triple layer cake (you can make it any flavor), with red raspberry filling. I stacked up 3 single layer round cakes with filling in between each layer. I put a thin crumb coat of icing on the cake and covered it with rolled white fondant.
I puckered the edges of the top to look like sheered off bark and gave it that slight crinkle look. I then took the end of a fine-tip paint brush, and using the opposite end (the end you would normally hold), I made parallel line indentations that I would later paint black to give it a white birch look. (Oh- and I also flavored the fondant with a vanilla/buttercream flavoring).
I then cut out leaves, acorns and the hunting license out of fondant and hand painted them with food colorings. I bought a new arrow (only $1.99) and speared the cake with it.
To make the knot on the cake, I just took a ball of fondant, kept it heaped up in the center, poke a little hole in it, spread out the edges and adhered it to the cake with icing. I then painted it black to give it that knot-look.
This cake was a huge success and has become my specialty.
That cake rocks!!!
Hello
Exactly what I was looking for – needed a new idea for this Christmas as it will be different for us. Thanks for sharing, am bookmarking so I can find it and practice before the “big week”.
Thanks.
