My son Luke was planning his 6th birthday party. He changed his mind at least 100 times about what he wanted to do! Finally he decided on a magic themed party. I found a magician to come and entertain the kids (money well spent by the way) and together we searched the internet for the type of cake he would like. He decided on a Magician hat with the bunny coming out. I was quite excited to do this one.
The cake was a chocolate mud cake and there are 3 of them to get the height of the hat. I used a ball shaped cake tin to make the shape of the bunny’s head. Everything else is made out of marshmallow fondant. The rim of the hat was left to dry for about a week, to make sure it was nice and hard and would keep it’s shape when placed on top of the hat. I cut out a bit of an indent to sit the bunny in the cake hat and then attached the rim.
I covered the base of the hat in black butter icing and the bunny in white butter icing. To give a fur look I covered the bunny cake in coconut. I then placed the bunny in the hat and attached all his bits and pieces, except for the ears, as the cake was too tall to fit in my fridge! I stuck the ears in just before I took it out to the kids.
Everyone loved the cake, kids and adults were all impressed. I had a lot of left overs though as it was made from 4 cakes. It froze well, and the kids had it in their lunch boxes for weeks later!
