Coolest Mario Birthday Cake

My 12 year old son wanted a homemade Mario birthday cake. I didn’t want to spend $80 for a retired pan on eBay. After looking at pictures on-line I decided a cake of just his face would be pretty simple as it’s basically just a round shape.

I bought a 12″x2″ round pan and just made Mario’s face. I lined the bottom of the pan with parchment paper to be sure it would come out in one piece. I traced the pan onto another sheet of parchment paper and then using an image from the internet drew the details of his face onto the parchment paper freehand. I used this drawing as a template to copy and help me plan out how to frost it. It took a few tries to get the proportions right.

I used a star tip for most of the cake. For areas you want to be smooth (eyes, teeth) use a round tip to fill them in. Then dip your finger in cornstarch and pat smooth. For the nose I over-piped (two layers of stars) to create dimension.

Also, a couple things to keep in mind when making red frosting: First, if you don’t use “No-Taste” Red and you use a lot of red coloring paste it can make the frosting taste bad. I used about half of plain red and half of the No Taste Red. Second, red frosting tends to get darker after it sits for a few hours. Last, I would say not to get too wrapped up in it looking exactly like the real thing. If it’s pretty close the kids don’t notice and they will love your creation!
