I let my kids tell me what kind of birthday cakes they wanted this year and my 23 year old told me she wanted a Mario Bros. cake since they are all into the “retro” video games at college now!
I used regular boxed cake mixes for the 8″ rounds for the base of the cake and the green pipe on the top of the cake is made from two cupcakes. I used a knife to straighten the edges. I used buttercream icing between the cake layers and on the outside of the cake.
The cake was then covered in Wilton fondant and I tinted the fondant several different colors for the various characters. I did have trouble with the fondant cracking and drying out since I’m not very familiar with working with fondant and it took me quite a while to make all the characters. I did end up using toothpicks in Mario and Yoshi to help stabilize them.
I had used Google Images and looked up Mario Bros. cakes to get most of my ideas from and then just combined all the characters I had found onto my cake.
My daughter loved her Homemade Mario Brothers Birthday Cake and I definitely had fun making it for her!
