My name is Amy and I am an in-home baker that makes/sells cakes in my spare time. I have a full-time job and 2 kids; plus I commute 160 miles round trip 5 days a week to work. Needless to say I am very busy already, but I do find time for my cakes. They started out as a hobby and turned into a way to make a little extra income on the side. I previously submitted a rainbow Hello Kitty cake and will be submitting this cake along with one more today. I try to only submit cakes that are original designs and not ones that are heavily influenced by the pictures of other artist’s cakes my clients bring in. I consider my cakes art work and I try to respect other’s work because of this reason.
This cake is a Mario Brother’s inspired cake. Everything on the cake is edible apart from the wires that are holding up my fondant stars. All of the decorations from the stars to the coins to the little mushrooms are all hand sculpted or cut out from my homemade marshmallow fondant. The eyes of the stars and mushrooms were drawn on with edible markers.
The Mario is solid fondant and also hand sculpted as well as the number 5 topper. The ball border is hand rolled fondant balls. The cake in total took about 9 hours to complete, but not all at one time of course. Just the Mario alone took about 30 minutes to sculpt (not including time it took to make fondant and color the fondant). Also I had to completely assemble the cake at home, then disassemble it, and drive it 80 miles to Monroe, then re-assemble it again.
A good tip I can give fellow cake makers is when working with the marshmallow fondant, it is much easier to color it if you heat it up for a few seconds in the microwave first. Hope y’all enjoy the cake!
