Coolest Mario Hat Birthday Cake

My thirteen year old wanted a Mario Hat Birthday Cake for his birthday so I decided to go with a fondant covered cake to get that smooth look. I first made four 8 inch round cakes from two cake mixes. I made them the day before because they had to be completely cool before cutting it and frosting it. I put three layers on top of each other with frosting in between. I used regular frosting from the store.

I shaped the cake into a hat shape using a picture from the internet as a model. I made a cardboard bill for the hat. the front of the hat is taller than the back.

Next I made the fondant which is a marshmallow fondant. It has one pound of small marshmallows, one pound of powdered sugar and water. Melt the marshmallows in the microwave with 2 tbs of water until they are completely melted. Grease your hands and your working surface with Crisco and mix the sugar with the marshmallows until you get a soft consistency and smooth surface. I just put it inside a greased bag until I needed it. I took a small amount out for the white badge on the front and the rest I added red food coloring to the fondant to get the color. I didn’t get a dark enough red because I ran out of red dye. I rolled out the fondant pretty thin about 1/8th of an inch then after dirty icing the cake placed the fondant on the cake and the bill. I made a small white disk for the badge and a red fondant M and “glued” them to the cake with frosting.

My son loved it!
