Coolest Mario Party Birthday Cake

After seeing the cakes I had put together for my daughters, my sis-in-law jokingly said I should forgo getting her sons presents, in lieu of agreeing to do their birthday cakes. Well, I love to bake & decorate cakes so much, I told her Done! (though we still ended up getting a present as well, I mean, he’s 9! Of course he wants presents, too!)

I made him a Mario Party Birthday Cake. I baked 3 9″ cakes, and 2 6″ cakes. Two of the 9″ and the 6″ make up the basic cake structure (bottom was yellow cake with strawberry cream filling, and the smaller was strawberry cake with buttercream filling). I then cut the remaining 9″ cake into very small square-shapes to simulate two deflating square balloons (inspired by the Mario Party mini game The Great Deflate).

I did order characters to place around the cake, then decorated the sides with Mario objects/backgrounds. The top was completed by adding 2 pretzel/melting wafer palm trees, and wire was used to make some of the characters appear to be jumping up on top of the balloon.

Overall, it was a huge hit with our video-game loving nephew!
