With my son Jameson’s 2nd birthday approaching and his obsessive interest in the Disney Cars movie I knew I had to try to make it for him. So I started with 3 Dunkin Hein’s yellow cake mixes. I baked them in standard cake pans, and when they were cool, I stacked them and carved the basic McQueen shape.
Since the birthday party was a week away I wrapped them tight and froze them. The night before the party I pulled the form out to thaw. I used canned Pillsburg white frosting dyed to the appropriate colors for the entire cake.
All details were done by hand in frosting, and it was finished with red edible glitter to make it look more like the Radiator Springs McQueen. There is not one bit of fondant on this entire cake.
I got tons of compliments on this homemade Mcqueen cake, and even at 4 am when I was still up working on it and my very sleepy son was brought into the kitchen for milk, he was super excited and knew exactly who it was supposed to be!!!! That made the long hours and work worth every second.
love it
