This is a cake made by myself and my two daughters, ages 8 and 5 for my youngest daughter’s fifth birthday.
We made two 13×9 cakes and put them side by side on a cake board and frosted them with turquoise icing. We found chocolate pearls at our local Hobby Lobby in the wedding section and lined the bottom of the cake with them. Then we made a smaller cake, iced it and covered it with graham cracker crumbs to look like sand. We set it on the top to look like a sand dune.
We measured the mermaid doll and cut out a little piece of the cake so she would sit properly. We then put her on the sand dune and added more “sand”.
We bought a seashell candy mold at Hobby Lobby also and made white chocolate seashells.
We decorated the rest of the cake with white chocolate seashells and chocolate pearls. The coral was purchased at our local Wal-Mart in the pet section.
My daughters really enjoyed helping me make this homemade mermaid birthday cake and we think it turned out great. Hope you can use it as an idea for your mermaid cake!
