For my son’s 3rd birthday I asked him what he wanted on his cake. He said “I want a Mickey cake mom.” I said okay no problem. I found a picture of Mickey and printed it off. I knew I wanted to make Mickey look good, so I decided to make him out of fondant. It took me a while to figure out what to do to get the lines perfect but then it hit me, like a light bulb going off above my head.
I took a pair of scissors and cut out all the different pieces by color. I then used them as templates when I cut the fondant. When all the pieces were cut out I arranged them on the cake, carefully mind you because some of the black areas were thin. I took black icing with a small writing tip and went around all the lines to make sure they “blended” into the cake, and iced on his mouth and under his eyes to give the 3D effect. I used primary colors for the lettering and for the star shaped edges.
My son was so happy with the cake when he saw it he didn’t want to cut Mickey up to eat him. He finally gave in and said “Mom, I want all of Mickey’s face to myself.” So when I was cutting the cake I made sure that his face was safe for my baby.
