Coolest Mickey Mouse Cake

My little girl loves Mickey Mouse so for her first birthday party I wanted to make a Mickey Mouse cake. I searched and searched but couldn’t find Mickey Mouse cake toppers or figurines anywhere in the UK. I ended up printing and laminating some pictures and then stapling pieces of drinking straws to them to make them stand up.

The bottom tier is vanilla cake with ready to roll royal icing. The middle is chocolate cake with blue butter cream and the top is vanilla cake with yellow butter cream. The adults at the party shared the two bottom tiers, while my little girl got the top all to herself. She had a fantastic time pulling the cake apart and squishing it between her fingers!

I used 6 dowels to hold up each tier of the cake. To get the small size top tier, my husband made a cardboard circle the size I wanted and covered it with foil. I then used that as a pattern to cut out the cakes from ones made in a slightly larger pan and as the base for that tier.

I was really pleased with the end result as I had many doubts along the way about whether or not it was going to work!

  1. Your cake looks amazing – very ingenious. I bought a Mickey Mouse silicone cake tin at the Disney store. It is a mold of his face and you could use it for a cake and then decorate it, or for a jelly mold. Just in case you are looking for one again – I’m sure you could find them online too.

  2. I loved your idea so much that I am planning on making a similar cake for my daughter’s birthday party. Did you use wooden or plastic dowels to hold each tier up?

    Any input would be appreciated!
