Coolest Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Cake

My sister and I made this Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Cake for my son’s 2nd birthday. The only show he watches is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, so with some ideas and tips from this website, this is what we ended up with.

It is just a two layer sheet cake with green buttercream icing (Wilton’s, using half regular Crisco and half butter flavored Crisco instead of butter since my son is allergic to milk). The base of the clubhouse is a cake baked in a Pyrex bowl and covered in blue fondant (a little Crisco makes fondant easier to work with).

The hand and foot are rice krispy treats covered in fondant. The leg, base of hand and Mickey Mouse head are painted foam. We intended to have the upslide, but it gave us some trouble, so we decided to leave it off so we would not ruin the rest of the cake trying. The trees are green spice drops on toothpicks, and I found the characters on eBay. I thought he would like to have them to play with afterward, and I was right.

Here is a tip my sister used: To make homemade icing have a “fondant” appearance, use Kleenex Viva paper towels (this is the only brand that works). Lay the paper towel on the cake and smooth gently with your hand and carefully pull off. You can try dampening the towel if it sticks. Use it on top and sides. It will look smooth and firm, but still tastes great!

Another tip: We used foam board to build and decorate the cake on. It makes it easy to move and clean up afterward.
