When I volunteered to make my Grandson, Cayden’s, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse cake for his 2nd birthday I had no idea how much time it would take or how much fun it would be. Seeing his face light up when he saw it made it all worthwhile. I had some ideas, as I’d watched enough Mickey episodes with each of my grandchildren.
I began baking a 13 x 19 inch marble cake (that I used for the clubhouse yard), a small round cake used for the house and 4 cakes in 3×5 baking tins that I used to cut for the shoe and Pluto’s doghouse.
I made two batches of fondant using the recipe that I found on Peggy’s website, which was way more than necessary. I could have used only one batch for all the pieces I needed to create.
I colored the fondant red (using Wilton no-taste red (the whole jar to get it from pink to red), blue, yellow, gold, black and gray. Then the fun began, creating all the shapes. The only pieces that were not editable were Mickey’s head (which was a 3 inch Styrofoam ball) and his ears (which I borrowed from one of the party headbands). I also use editable markers to outline the door and windows on the clubhouse.
I iced the 13 x 19 cake using green colored buttercream icing and used a small shell for the border and small trees throughout the yard.
My daughter-in-law make the star sugar cookies that I iced red and used to wish him Happy Birthday and write his name.
What a great job you did on this cake! I am making one for my daughter’s 2nd b-day and you have given me some great ideas, thank you!
