I made my daughters homemade Minnie Mouse cake, using 3 Victoria sponge cakes and re-shaping two of them for the ears. I stuck them to the main cake using jam.
Having iced all the cakes with royal icing, (leave 24 hrs if ready rolled icing or 8 hrs between each layer of icing – approx 3 layer required, before using the buttercream icing), I used a star-shaped piping nozzle and piped black buttercream for the ears and buttercream with a very small amount of pink food colouring for the flesh colour (I used a cocktail stick dipped in the food colouring 3 times to get it too this colour, so use very sparingly).
To outline the eyes, mouth, nose and eye lashes I used a black icing pen, as I also did for the tongue. For the bow i used royal icing with red food colouring and a white icing pen for the spots. Once the top had been iced, I went around the side of the cake with vanilla butter-icing, again using the star piping nozzle.
Great job! It reminds me of the Mickey Mouse cake I made for my son’s first birthday 24 years ago!
