I started with the Martha Stewart recipe for banana cake. I used the Wilton stand up teddy bear cake pan and one small scoop of batter in a muffin tin. I baked the cake at 350 degrees for 55 minutes. The cake did not bake over the edge of the pan like it does with other cake mixes so I had to improvise.
I used a serrated knife to trim the ears off the bear and tucked those pieces of cake under the feet to give them some more fullness (frosting is very forgiving so don’t panic!). I cut the cupcake in half vertically and glued the pieces on the head with frosting to make the ears. I then placed two toothpicks in each to assure that they stayed on.
I piped the face, ears, hands, feet and facial features with black and then used a star tip with chocolate buttercream for the body fur. I tinted a small amount of frosting tan for the face, inner ears, hands, and feet. I used brown frosting for tail.
I made some white cupcakes with chocolate frosting for people who don’t like bananas. I couldn’t find Runts candy so I just used yellow frosting to make bananas on the cupcakes. I just finished the homemade monkey birthday cake and I am excited to see what my son thinks of his first birthday cake. I am sure he will be thrilled!! He loves monkeys.
Wow, love your cake! Your son is going to love it. You are so talented.
