My son was turning one and even though I’m not a big baker/cook, I really wanted to be able to say I made him his first cake. After thinking more on it and doing some research I found some examples of some really cute Monkey Birthday Cupcakes (from this site actually) and I just knew I could do it.
I did go the easier route and use box mix of dark chocolate for the batter although I think I might attempt to do completely homemade next time. I also used pre-made icing also in dark chocolate (as I mentioned before I’m not much of a baker and wasn’t sure of how long this process would take). I iced the cupcakes as usual and then the fun began. For the muzzle I used regular sized Nilla Wafers and drew on them with with a gel tube. To add variety, I gave them different expressions. In the meantime, my husband was snipping mini marshmallows in half for the eyes and then also cutting the mini Nilla wafers in half for the ears. I attempted to use them whole, but found halving them and using a little icing as “glue” worked much better. I added a little chocolate sprinkles on for hair and drew the pupils on the marshmallows, also in different positions to emphasize the expressions.
They were such a big hit and I was very proud. They did not take nearly as long as I thought they would to prepare, but you should still allow yourself ample time as some of the work is a bit tedious. Good luck!
Very cute!!
I love these and so did everyone else. I made these for my granson McClane’s 3rd Birthday party. They were quite easy to make {good thing}. Thank you to whom ever came up with such a cute idea and thanks for sharing it.
