I made this monkey cake for my son’s first birthday. I made it to look like his favorite stuffed animal that he brings everywhere! I used a buttermilk birthday cake recipe from Nigella Lawson and Ricks buttercream frosting from Allrecipes(made with 3/4 butter, 1/4 shortening).
I baked the cakes in a 10 inch round, a 6 inch round, 1 bottom of a large pampered chef bowl, 6 Pyrex ramekins and 3/4 of a cupcake. The bottom is simply a layered 10 inch.
For the monkey I stacked the 6 inch, the PC bowl, the 6 ramekins along with the cupcake(turned sideways) with icing between each layer. Then I refrigerated for an hour or so. I then went to carving, using my son’s animal as a guide for shape. I then placed the monkey on top of the iced bottom layer and used a hair piping tip to pipe all the fur.
The arms, legs, ears and tail were then made out of rice krispie treats and attached with toothpicks. They also got the fur icing treatment. The sign was made from chocolate buttons after not having a place to write happy birthday!
Nice job!
