I made this Monster Book of Monsters cake for my 9 year old nephew. He loves reading and as most boys that age, the Harry Potter books are a favorite. So, I looked online for some inspiration and I saw a few similar type cakes and decided to give it a go.
The cake was a chocolate cake but for the brown marshmallow fondant, instead of adding food coloring I added cocoa powder which made the cake smell sooo double chocolaty. I found it a bit tricky trying to get all the teeth into the side of the cake but just about managed it. I was also concerned that my own little girls would be put off by the look of this one but instead there were animated discussions over who would get to eat the eyes!
The eyes were simply balls of fondant rolled up and placed on top of the cake before putting the fondant layer over the top and cutting a slit to allow them to peep through. I did try make them look a little more aged and menacing by mixing some cocoa with water and trying to paint around them a little darker, there is a fine line between making them look menacing or sticky – adding water to the top of fondant in Singapore where it just stays sticky is tricky!
