Like many of you, my son is totally into monster trucks (Grave Digger and Big Foot 5 are his favorite). For his birthday, I wanted to do something special so I planned out the design of a monster truck cake a few weeks ago. This was only my second attempt at using fondant, and first attempt at cake carving but I think it turned out well (he liked it).
I used devil’s food cake for the base and a yellow cake for the truck. I used rice crispy treats for the wheels (shaped by cramming the rice crispy treat into coffee cups). The hardest part of all of it was coloring the fondant.
Love this cake, want to do something very similar for my son’s 6th b-day. What did you use to make those rocks?
I’d say get malty balls and use them as is
or dip them in black icing.
Thanks for the compliment. It’s funny you should ask about the rocks. I had left over fondant and my 5 year old son (his cake) was so excited and wanted to help so I gave him the fondant and he made the rocks. Good thing too because they ended up helping to hold up the front end of the truck! As I said in the description, it was my first attempt at carving. I’ve since made a cake shaped like a graduation cap that turned out pretty nice as well, and some traditional round cakes, all in fondant. The stuff is a lot work but it comes out so much cleaner than frosting.
