I made this Homemade Moon Birthday Cake Design for my wonderful stepson’s birthday party. He is totally into outer space. I never made a cake that turned out but this time I did my homework and was patient.
I used three boxes of cake mix. I picked chocolate. I bought Wilton’s sports ball pan and a square pan. I baked two layers for the space and one for the moon. I leveled the layers. I made buttercream icing using a family recipe. I mixed blue and black into the icing to make the sky and just a few dots of black into some white butter cream to make the moon. Don’t use a lot of black or it will be to dark for the moon.
I stacked the layers and applied the icing. I applied icing to the moon before I put it on the top of cake. I also took a skewer and drew circles onto the moon. Using a spoon I dug out the cake creating a craters I filled the inside of the crater with some of the icing I made for the sky. I ordered the cake toppers online. I added some silver sprinkles for a star effect and cut out and baked some star shape sugar cookies to apply on and around the cake.
My stepson saw it when it was done and yelled AWESOME! so I am happy with the results.
