A friend of mine is going to face an extremely tough challenge in September 2013. She is going to climb the Kilimanjaro mountain in order to raise funds for charity. It’s a really noble cause so I wanted to make her a special cake for her 30th birthday.
I baked 5 round cakes and all of different dimensions. Then I put 3 of them on top of each other and carved them in order to shape them into a mountain. Since the Kilimanjaro is in fact 3 volcanoes jointed together and not just one, so with the other 2 cakes I formed the other 2 smaller mountains and positioned them on each side of the biggest one. When the positioning of the mountain was ready, I dirty iced the whole thing and covered it in grey fondant.
To do the iced tips I made some white royal icing and spread it on the upper parts of the mountains. Then with some diluted green food coloring I painted the lower part to make it look like grass. I rolled some grey and white fondant together to form some rocks and placed them in the cavities of the mountain.
Last but not least I did a cute figurine of my friend Victoria out of modelling paste, all wrapped up in her pink jacket, scarf and hat together with her little bag. She was so delighted when she saw it. Good luck my friend!
