My son wanted a Mario themed cake for his birthday so I decided a 3D mushroom cake would be a good idea. The cake itself is funfetti, with homemade cream cheese frosting. The stem of the mushroom is 2-6in round layers covered with homemade marshmallow fondant.
The top is a 9in round with a cake that was baked in a 9in glass bowl. I covered the top with red homemade marshmallow fondant and cut white circles to place as the dots on a mushroom. I cut out letters for his name and 6 up with cookie cutters, the black is also homemade marshmallow fondant. I made extra cupcakes to surround it, funfetti as well with a cream cheese frosting that I dyed green. I cut mini marshmallows to make them look like small mushrooms to go with the theme. It was a hit.
